Hypnotherapy Sessions to Treat Anxiety
What is anxiety?
‘Anxiety is a word we use to describe feelings of unease, worry or fear. It incorporates both the emotions and the physical sensations we might experience when we are worried or nervous about something.’ (Source: mind.org.uk)
Most people will experience feelings of anxiety from time to time, but prolonged spells of anxiety or an anxious response to everyday events and situations may indicate undesirable levels of anxiety that can lead to strong feelings of discomfort and unease, and even exhaustion and a reduced sense of well-being.
Symptoms of anxiety may include: feeling tense or uncertain, your mind being overcrowded with unwanted or negative thoughts, excessive worry, a lack of concentration, loss of confidence, poor sleep and feeling out of control. You may also experience physical symptoms, such as: tight neck and back muscles, headaches, excessive sweating, stomach pains, feeling light-headed and panic attacks. Hypnotherapy can be a wonderfully effective way to treat anxiety and its related symptoms. It is a gentle form of therapy and, my solution focused approach, blends talking therapy (ie psychotherapy) with hypnosis.
In your first session, you will learn a little about how key elements of the brain work and how this can bring about feelings of anxiety and loss of control and what we can do about it. Subsequent sessions will encourage you to take a more positive outlook on life, thereby shrinking what we solution focused hypnotherapists call your ‘stress bucket’, which can help to aid more restful sleep and reduce anxiety levels.
The hypnosis element of the treatment will help you to learn how to switch off and relax, while also opening up the subconscious mind to receive positive suggestions about how you want to think and behave, as well as how you want your life to be.
The initial consultation
The first stage of the therapeutic process is your initial consultation during which I will gather some useful background information about yourself and the way anxiety is affecting your everyday life followed by a conversation about the changes you would like to make. As previously mentioned, I will then explain a little bit about how the brain works and how hypnotherapy can help you to make positive changes in your life, reducing your anxiety in the process.
When you return for your first full hypnotherapy session, the first half of the session will be based on talking therapy whereby we will focus on the positive actions, thoughts and interactions in your life since we last met, thereby strengthening the part of the brain that is most receptive to positivity and rational thought. The brain is a wonderfully adaptive organ that CAN be retrained fairly rapidly if you are willing to fully engage in the process of change.
The second half of the session will be a fabulously relaxing 20-25 minute session on the hypnotherapy couch whereby we work to open up the subconscious mind to receive positive suggestions, helping you to shape your life into how you want it to be.
If you are new to hypnotherapy, rest assured that you will be in control at ALL TIMES. The trance state you will achieve is very normal; you actually go into trance many times throughout the day, say, when you are watching television or reading a book and find you’ve drifted off and missed a crucial point.
Positive benefits of hypnotherapy
Most people notice fairly rapid changes, depending on how severe their anxiety is when they seek treatment. My aim is to help you improve your life as quickly as possible, while also ensuring that new patterns of thinking are fully embedded before you carry on the good work without me.
Benefits can include: restful sleep, feeling more energised, being calmer, having more confidence, adopting a positive outlook, being in control, feeling freer, improved concentration, feeling more motivated and more!
Your initial consultation and assessment will last about an hour and is £50.
Each individually tailored session is £50 and typically lasts 55-60 minutes. It’s recommended that people come along weekly, especially in the first instance, in order to maximise the speed and effectiveness of positive change.
